40. Sadvritta — The Code of Good Conduct

Ayurveda holds that mental and social conduct are as much a part of health as food. Charaka's sadvritta (good conduct) describes ways of living that keep the mind sattvic. A few that are especially relevant to life at an ashram-guesthouse:

  • Speak truthfully, kindly and in measure; avoid harsh speech.

  • Respect elders, teachers and the learned; serve others (seva).

  • Keep the senses neither starved nor indulged — moderation in all things.

  • Rise early, keep clean, wear clean clothes, keep the living space tidy.

  • Be calm in success and failure; forgive easily; avoid holding grudges.

  • Give in charity according to capacity; share food.

  • Avoid excessive exertion, late nights, and the company of those who disturb the mind.

  • Begin each day with remembrance and end it with gratitude.
