Lifestyle — Vihara
About 1 min read
Ayurveda holds that mental and social conduct are as much a part of health as food. Charaka's sadvritta (good conduct) describes ways of living that keep the mind sattvic. A few that are especially relevant to life at an ashram-guesthouse:
- Speak truthfully, kindly and in measure; avoid harsh speech.
- Respect elders, teachers and the learned; serve others (seva).
- Keep the senses neither starved nor indulged — moderation in all things.
- Rise early, keep clean, wear clean clothes, keep the living space tidy.
- Be calm in success and failure; forgive easily; avoid holding grudges.
- Give in charity according to capacity; share food.
- Avoid excessive exertion, late nights, and the company of those who disturb the mind.
- Begin each day with remembrance and end it with gratitude.
